Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffees Are Out of Stock
Posted by on
I regret to let everyone know that we are out of stock of all of our Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffees. This includes the regular and peaberry. The prices have been increasing over the past year and now there is no more supply to be had. We received the following message from Jamaica on the the cause:
Coffee consumers should expect a 40 to 50 per cent increase in the cost of the product as Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee bean supplies fall to the fungal leaf rust disease and berry borer pest. Those factors along with a prolonged drought in 2014, has caused production to sink to its lowest point in about 30 years. The diseases have claimed approximately 28 per cent of coffee crops, resulting in scarcity of the commodity, and a rise in price for both Jamaican and international consumers.
Blue Mountain Coffee production has dropped to 150,000 boxes from 450,000 to 500,000 boxes some 20 years ago. Local farmers are said to be scurrying to rehabilitate their fields to supply processors with beans at improved farm gate prices; coffee cherry prices are now as high as 3 times what they were at this time last year.
For the time being our JBM coffees will not be visible on our website. As soon as we get additional supplies we will post here with the new price. Sorry to bring this bad news for those that love JBM.
