The Origins of Mocha Java
The words Mocha and Java have a great history in the world of coffee and have come to be generic terms when describing coffee in general. The reason is that coffee from these two areas were some of the main coffee distribution ports during the 17th century. Mocha was the world’s first commercial coffee, and Java was considered second.
Java Island is located in Indonesia and was one of the first famous coffees and one of the first coffees to be cultivated in Indonesia starting in 1699. The Dutch colonized and set up a commercial coffee growing and distribution.
Mocha, also spelled as Mocha or Mukha, is a town in southwestern Yemen, on the Red Sea and the Tihāmah coastal plain. Yemen’s most renowned historic port was the coffee exporting center for coffees throughout Africa. The old port is now in ruins but the name carries on.
Both areas exported excellent coffees and the mixture of a Indonesian and African coffee compliment each other for an excellent cup. As a result the Mocha Java Blend for Europeans in the 18th century combined the extreme ends of their coffee-growing world.
